What is the Child Student Visa UK?

If your child is between the ages of 4 and 17 and wants to attend a private or independent school in the U.K. recognised as an approved student sponsor by the Home Office, you may be eligible for a UK Child Student Visa.

Applying for a Student Visa is the better option if you are 18 or older and want to attend a university or college in the United Kingdom. You have two options when applying to an independent school as a Child Student or a Student if you are 16 or 17 years old and wish to study a course at or above Level 3 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework.

Who is Eligible to Apply for a UK Child Student Visa?

The Child student visa UK eligibility age is 4 to 17 years old. To get entrance clearance, one must meet the strict requirements associated with this immigration category. Applicants should check if the following is relevant to their case:

  • You need to be a genuine student with a guaranteed spot in a private, tuition-based institution.
  • Submit all the necessary documents on time
  • Someone has sent you a CAS, or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.
  • Confirmation of written authorisation from a parent or guardian is provided.
  • No history of illegally staying in the country or violating a visa
  • There is enough money to cover tuition and living expenses for the whole course
  • Possessing enough proficiency in the English language
  • Provide proof of the necessary credentials
  • Proof that the student will go back to their native nation after the course is complete

There are strict requirements for the kinds of approved courses, and only specific educational institutions may issue a Certificate of Sponsorship to school visa applicants.

Contact our Student Visa solicitors at 02033939272 or fill out the form below to schedule a consultation with an immigration barrister to assist you with your UK Child Student Visa application.

Course Requirement

The following courses are eligible for Child Student Visa applicants:

  • A course aligned with the National Curriculum.
  • A course adhering to the Recognised Qualification Framework (RQF) that is not a foundation course designed to prepare the Child Student for higher education entry.
  • Also, a course deemed academically equivalent to the above by Ofsted (England), the Education and Training Inspectorate (Northern Ireland), Education Scotland (Scotland), or Estyn (Wales).
  • A course delivered in compliance with current Independent School education inspection standards.

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

In case you are accepted into a recognised academic program at a private or independent school in the United Kingdom, the institution will provide you with a CAS reference number.

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies must be granted by a student sponsor, which is an independent school with a current licence. Your Child Student visa application needs to be submitted no later than six months after you receive your CAS.

You can’t use the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies in an application that was already approved or rejected, and the school can’t have revoked its offer either.

Details of the intended term of study estimated housing costs, total tuition and fees, and any payments made must all be included in the CAS.

What are the Financial Requirements for a Child Student Visa UK?

You must prove to UK Visas and Immigration that you can afford to study in the UK and live comfortably while you’re there if you want to study as a child.

Fees of Course

On their application, children must show that they have sufficient cash to cover their course expenses.

Students cannot work under any circumstances until they are 16, and even then, there are restrictions.

Living Cost

You will be required to provide proof that you can cover your living expenses in the UK unless you belong to one of the exceptions mentioned below. Your living situation will determine the amount you require:

  • Boarding at a Residential Independent School: The applicant must have sufficient funds to cover boarding fees for one academic year.
  • Term-time Private Foster Carer or Close Relative: If the applicant is staying with a British carer or relative with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), they must have at least £570 per month for each month of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months.
  • Living with a Parent or Guardian on a Parent of a Child Student Visa: The applicant must show £1,560 per month for the duration of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months. If the parent is accompanied by additional children, the applicant must also show £625 per child per month for the entire duration of the course, up to 9 months.
  • Aged 16 or 17 and Living Independently: The applicant must have either:
    • £1,265 (or £1,334 from 1/12/2020) per month for each month of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months if studying in London; or
    • £1,015 (or £1,023 from 1/12/2020) per month for each month of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months if studying outside London.

Must make sure that the required funds have been held for at least 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before the submission of the Child Student Visa UK application.

Special Categories

Applicants that fall into the following categories will be considered to have met the financial criterion for the Child Student Visa:

  • Candidates whose legal status in the UK extends back at least twelve months from the date on which their Child Student Visa application is due;
  • Anyone applying who is a British national (overseas) or resides in one of the countries or territories listed as having a “differential evidence requirement” (UKVI can still ask these applicants to prove they have the necessary funds, so they should still have enough on hand).

Genuine Student Rule

To qualify as a genuine student, especially if you’re aged 16 or 17, you must meet specific criteria. The Home Office will assess various factors to verify your student status, including your immigration history, educational background, chosen course, intended school and study location, reasons for studying in the UK, post-study plans, and your personal and financial circumstances.
