What is the UK Short-Term Study Visa?

A Short-Term Student visa allows you to study English in the UK for a period of six to eleven months. If your course duration is up to six months, you might be eligible to apply through the Visitor route.

Before traveling to the UK, you are required to apply and obtain approval for a Short-Term Student visa. You can submit your application from any nation other than the UK, as long as you have legal permission to stay in that country.

Eligibility for the visa requires that you have been approved for admission into an English language program at a recognised institution. However, you are not permitted to attend an academy or a publicly funded school under this visa.

Application Process for the UK Short-Term Study Visa

You will be granted permission to study in the UK for 11 months if you are eligible.

Your passport will be stamped with a vignette that is valid for 90 days, during which you must visit the UK. Upon receiving notification of your approval, you will also receive an invitation to create an account on UKVI eVisa. After creating an account with UKVI, you may log in and view your digital eVisa, which will display the terms and duration of your permit at any time.

You will not receive a vignette if you are an EEA national who has used the UK Immigration: ID Check app; instead, you will obtain your permit in the form of an online digital status. Anyone who has to verify your consent can see this digital status.

Key Requirements While in the UK on a Short-Term Study Visa

As a short-term student in the UK, you have to fulfil a number of conditions.

  • Only the course for which you have been authorised may be studied.
  • If your studies conclude before the date your immigration status concludes, you must plan to depart the UK within 30 days. Your future visa applications to the UK may be impacted if you do not depart the country within this time frame. For instance, if your immigration authorisation specifies that you are a full-time student until the completion of your studies, as stated in the letter you submitted to the Home Office with your application, this indicates your studies will end on that date. Consequently, you must leave the UK no later than that specified date.
  • During your studies in the UK, you are not permitted to perform any type of employment, work placement, or work experience. Furthermore, you are not permitted to do any professional or business-related activity in the UK. You must apply for a separate visa, such as the student route, in order to visit the UK and be permitted to work while you are a student.
  • It is not possible to make a request to extend your permit as a student for a short period of time or to change to a different visa category while you are still in the UK. In the event that you choose to continue your education in the UK beyond the expiration of your short-term student visa, you will be required to return to your home country and submit an application for entrance clearance through the student visa pathway or another immigration classification that is eligible.

According to paragraph 6 of the Immigration Rules, you do not have the right to receive “public funds,” which are defined as a list of specific benefits that are supplied.

What if your Short-Term Study Visa Application is Refused?

There is an administrative review process that you can go through if your application for a Short-term Student visa is denied. In this case, you have a choice between two possibilities:

  • An administrative review is an option that you have. This will cost you £80 and must be done within 28 days of the date of refusal.
  • If this is successful, the rejection will be removed from your immigration record. However, in the future, when questioned about refusals, you should mention that it was overturned on your immigration applications. The potential length of time required to complete this process is a concern as it might cause you to fail to attend the beginning of your course.
  • Although you can reapply for immigration authorisation, doing so will result in an uncontested denial that you will need to disclose if you are required to do so in the future.

Family Members and the UK Short-Term Study Visa

No family members may accompany a short-term student to the UK according to immigration regulations.

Therefore, if you wish to bring a spouse, partner, kid, or other individual to the UK with you while you apply as a Short-term Student, they must submit an application as normal Visitors.

Even if you have more than six months of immigration permission, the maximum duration for a normal visitor is six months. They can’t work, but they can study as long as it fits specific criteria.

Your dependents may be able to apply if you are qualified and opt to apply through the Student method instead of the other way around.
