What is a Global Talent Visa UK?

Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) was replaced by the Global Talent category on 20, February 2020 to recruit talented and promising scientific, digital technology, and arts and cultural workers to the UK.

It has fewer criteria than other work visas under the UK’s new points-based immigration system. You must meet specific eligibility requirements and usually need an endorsement unless you have an award listed in ‘Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.’ In that case, you can apply for the visa directly.

The Global Talent Route does not have a salary requirement or an English language test, but the endorsing body may set its own criteria.

You can work for yourself, become a director, or take compensated employment, but it must be in the field for which you have been endorsed. Studying is allowed under ATAS conditions.

Unlike the skilled worker visa, you do not need to notify the Home Office if you change jobs.

Global Talent participants can bring qualifying dependents from abroad or move from other UK visa categories.

Visas can be granted for a duration of one to five years, with extensions possible. Typically, applicants will be allowed for UK ILR after completing a single leave period, such as 3 years for exceptional talent or 5 years for promising talent. Importantly, this visa does not require employer sponsorship or necessitate employers to pay the Immigration Skills Charge.

What are the Global Talent Visa UK Requirements?

To be eligible for the Global Talent visa, you should be at least 18 years old and must be able to prove that they are either current or potential leaders in their respective disciplines.

Areas that Qualify

The Global Talent route is open to both applicants who demonstrate “promise” and the potential to become leaders in their respective fields and established talent who can demonstrate that they are already leaders in their respective fields.

The Global Talent visa is available to individuals from a diverse range of fields, which is indicative of the diverse talent that the UK is attempting to attract. These fields include, but are not limited to:

Digital Technology: This category encompasses professionals who are at the vanguard of technology in disciplines such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software development.

Arts and Culture: Eligible individuals include artists, musicians, authors, actors, and other cultural specialists who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. Innovation and inventive excellence are the primary objectives of this category.

Academia and Research: Scholars and researchers in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences are also eligible. This includes individuals who are involved in groundbreaking research, publish influential papers, and hold academic positions at prestigious institutions.

Demonstrating Leadership or the Possibility of Leadership

Applicants must first obtain endorsement from an authorised body or possess a qualifying industry award listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes before applying for a Global Talent visa with the Home Office. This is necessary to show that they satisfy the necessary professional standards.

Applicants must be acknowledged by a pertinent organisation in their respective fields in order to corroborate their leadership or potential leadership status when applying through endorsement. The evaluation and validation of applicants’ credentials within their respective areas of expertise is the responsibility of these endorsing bodies.

Alternatively, Applicants who have been granted an award from the list in Appendix Prestigious Prizes can pass the endorsement stage. This list encompasses prestigious honours that have been acknowledged by the UK government as evidence of exceptional talent. If you have been awarded one of these, you are naturally eligible for this visa, which can simplify the application process.

How Can I Apply for a Global Talent Visa?

The applications for this visa are submitted online, either through the switching procedure within the UK or from abroad.

If you are located outside the UK, you should submit your application for entry clearance at the nearest visa application centre in your country of residence.

For those who are already in the UK and hold valid status under any of the following visa categories, you can apply online to transition to the Global Talent visa:

  • Start-up visa
  • Innovator visa
  • Tier 1 visa
  • Skilled Worker (Tier 2) visa
  • Tier 5 visa
  • Student visa (Tier 4), except for Short Term Student Visa holders

This allows individuals with existing UK visas to switch to the Global Talent route based on their eligibility.

The online application form can be completed immediately if you are relying on a prestigious reward for your application.

It is feasible to submit an application for a visa prior to receiving endorsement; however, failure to obtain endorsement will result in disapproval of your visa application. The Home Office will send you an email containing a duplicate of the endorsement letter if you have been successfully endorsed. You have a three-month window to submit your visa application. If your application is rejected, you may have the option to request a review of your endorsement.

The validity criteria must be satisfied by this endorsement application. This entails the completion of the appropriate application form(s), the payment of the applicable endorsement fee, and the acquisition of endorsement from the relevant professional body.

Subsequently, it is essential to confirm the validity of the visa application. You will be obligated to submit all necessary supporting documentation, including the endorsement letter from a Home Office-approved endorsing body, submit any necessary biometrics, and pay all pertinent fees, including the Immigration Health Charge. Additionally, you will be required to complete the appropriate form.

Additionally, it will be necessary for you to demonstrate that you satisfy the eligibility criteria. To qualify, you must either be acknowledged as an expert in your field or exhibit significant promise, indicating that you have the potential to become a prominent figure in your area of expertise.

In the end, it will be necessary for you to prove that you have acquired the requisite 70 points.

Global Talent Visa Application

To apply for the visa, you must fulfill the following conditions:

  • If you are not depending on an endorsement, you must have received a prize from the list in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.
  • Alternatively, if you are applying with an endorsement, you must present an endorsement letter from an authorised endorsing body.

Your endorsement letter must have been issued within the last 3 months and should not have been revoked by the endorsing body at the time of your application.

Global Talent Visa Renewal Application

To apply for an extension of your visa, you must meet the required earnings criteria.

  • If your initial visa was granted with an endorsement, it must not have been revoked by the endorsing body.
  • If your application was based on a prize listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes, that prize must still be valid and not withdrawn.

Global Talent Visa Fees & Processing Times

Applicants can submit their Global Talent visa applications either from within the United Kingdom or from abroad, with a fee of £716.

Applicants who are applying for endorsement will be required to pay this fee in two installments: £524 when they register for endorsement and £192 when they apply for the visa at the Home Office.

The full £716 must be paid by applicants who are applying based on a prestigious award when submitting their visa application.

Additionally, each dependent application incurs a fee of £716. When submitting an application, the entire sum must be paid.

Global Talent Visa Processing Times

The endorsement process typically lasts for one month; however, digital technology applicants may be eligible to apply for expedited procedures.

The processing period for a visa is contingent upon the country from which it is applied. Applications submitted from outside the UK are presently processed within three weeks, while those submitted from within the United Kingdom typically take eight weeks.

Through the priority service (decision delivered within five business days) or the super priority service (decision delivered within one business day), you may be able to pay for quicker processing. These are accessible for an additional fee of £500 and £1000 per application, accordingly. When submitting your application, you will be informed of the availability of these services.

Global Talent Visa Based on Endorsement

The Global Talent visa application process typically involves two phases for the majority of applicants. First, you must seek to be endorsed by an approved body in the absence of a prize as outlined in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes. You are only able to register for the visa from the Home Office with endorsement.

There are six organisations that provide endorsements for the Global Talent visa, each focusing on different fields of expertise. These include the General Endorsement Criteria, which covers a wide range of professions, as well as specific categories such as Global Talent in Digital Technology, Film & Television, Architecture, Science, Engineering, Humanities & Medicine, Arts & Culture, and Fashion. Additionally, applicants who have received a prestigious prize listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes are also eligible for endorsement under this route.
